Story Tellers 3: Best of British!

Because of a busy week at work and because of not seeing my family all that much I decided to relax a little with my drawing marathon and create one illustration over three days.

I have always wanted to do an illustration where I cover the character in tattoos. Our British bare knuckle fighter is decorated in national symbols and national songs. I like the idea of an old-school english gentleman having a hidden and rebellious identity.

Story Tellers 1: Sailor

Had a flash of inspiration and with that an idea for a series of illustrations focusing on characters and story telling. Our sailor here began life as a sketch and then built up in illustrator. After which I added some texture using photoshop.

Ideally I will be able to one of these a day but less than likely. So I plan to use this story telling idea within my day to day illustration project and then render a full one at least once a week.

A larger version can be found on Blogger.

365 Days of Creative Endeavor!

I have started a little side project where I will be doing one illustration everyday day for a whole year.

I am always doodling little things here and there, characters, stories, faces on scraps of paper so I thought would get them on the net so they don't get lost forever. This will be a great chance to practice and at the same time keeping the creative juices flowing. I have already been posting for 4 days and you catch up with it weekly on here and of course daily at

For My Lad!

This has been a month in the making. My son's second birthday is coming up in a couple of weeks time and my wife and I thought this poster would be a nice present for him.

Jack is growing up with two languages, so we hope this will also help him with his grasp of English.

I will do an Estonian edition at some point for him also.

Chloé is Printed!

Always nice to see the fruits of my labour. Earlier this year I illustrated this lovely lady for the Auberge Hostel in Montreal. Chloé is doted around the walls of the hostel to aid guests around various facilities and rooms within the establishment.

Originally, the lovely lady here was loosely based on the actress Audrey Tautou. Being that the hostel is in French-Canada this was an ideal starting point for the look of the girl. To the left is the finished piece and below are the various outcomes and looks we worked on before arriving at the finished piece.

Infographic Experiments

Infographics are in simplest terms graphical representations of information, data and knowledge. In my case, I have attempted to communicate a weekly training session I undertake (above) and the results of a BMI test I took in a Boots pharmacy last year (below). I wanted to create something graphically striking and interesting to look. What I didn't want was that styling to confuse the audience as some infographics can be hard to read and extract information. The graphical elements should be apart of how the viewer would understand and read data.

Infographic Experiments

Whilst me wife and son sleep on the sofa I started playing with my red and blue pen using only these colours to experiment with some techniques in character development.

A bit of fun really. In a perfect world I might get paid to draw funny characters like this all day. I would miss designing though.

Type Design for My Lady!

I though my wife deserved another design. Something a bit more quirky and stylish and more in sync with her funky designs. How many wifes can say there husbands have designed them their very own typeface?

Luckily she likes it! Identity and branding stuff to come.

Sylvan Chomet

Sylvain Chomet talks about animation from Sam Taylor on Vimeo.

By far one of my favorite animators, simply because the core of the animation within his films as they are predominately hand drawn. If you like what you see here then check out his feature films The Triplets of Belleville or The Illusionist.

Travel Posters

David Levine, the host of www.travelbrochuregraphics.com, has very kindly put his collection of 20s and 30s travel ephemera on line for the world to enjoy. The collection is a homage to the graphic styles of adversing in Europe and Asia during these times. My favorite are the pieces that mix photos and graphic elements together.

These images are very stylish and brave. I wonder if any designer today could get away with any of these ideas without the client getting panicky about what was going on. Cynical? Perhaps. But did these graphic artists/designers behind these works had clients controlling every aspect of the final piece? Perhaps there was more freedom and trust for creative types back then.
